The Argyle Liberty Christian Lady Warriors improved to 28-2 for the season and 9-0 in district with a 57-36 road win over district rival Bishop Lynch on January 27, 2015. The Lady Warriors are a powerhouse, and their talent showed as they quickly jumped out to an 11-0 lead. Aggressive full court pressure early on and dominance on the boards was crucial to their win. Highly recognized Coach Ken Burroughs only suits out eight players, but all are talented and productive. Coach Burroughs’ squads are always known for their hard work, great conditioning and supreme fundamentals, and this year’s team is no different.
Talent is also a big part of the equation for this team under the direction of 5’10” junior guard Rebekah Hand. Involved in every possession on the offensive and defensive end, Hand had 17 points, 13 rebounds, four assists and two steals for the night. Her game is highlighted by outstanding shooting, great court vision, tough play, physicality, and on-the-ball defense.
At 6’0”, junior post Kendall Ellig displayed her all-around athleticism with 11 points, 7 rebounds, two assists, and four blocks. She can score well from either block and her elevated vertical makes her tough to defend. Both her mid-range and long-range game is impressive for a forward; her quick first step allows her to penetrate the paint and finish effectively. On defense, she is a speedy shot blocker, which makes it difficult for the opposing team to score.
Sophomore guard Tatum Barber is a 5’8” high motored and fearless player. Against Lynch, she recorded 15 points, seven rebounds, three assists and a steal; this young player has a bright future ahead of her. Junior guard, 5’7” Sydney Goodson also had a strong game with 11 points, three rebounds, five assists and three steals. Goodson is a leader on the team whose all-around skill package allows her to contribute on both ends of the floor.
The only negative to the evening for the Lady Warriors was the injury to guard Hannah Hand. The 5’9” junior collided head on with a Bishop Lynch player, suffering concussion-like symptoms and not returning to the game; she seemed to be feeling better by the end of the game so hopefully no long-term effects pursue. With talent, depth, versatility and coaching, Liberty Christian is a team priming itself for a State Championship run. The best competition they will face is most likely against district-rival Prestonwood Christian; this upcoming rematch will likely prove as entertaining as the first.
