One of the best juniors in the North Central Texas area may also be one of state’s least known talents. Chasen Howard is a 5’11” multi-position player attending Santo High School. She led her team to a 22-9 record this year and a run in the State Semifinals. They lost to eventual 2A State Champion Martin’s Mill High School, but it was a hugely successful season. It is worth noting that Coach Tony Raffaele’s squad also qualified for the State Tournament in the previous 2013-2014 season. Howard averaged 13.6 points, 6.1 rebounds, 0.7 assists, 2.1 steals and 2.3 blocks per game this year. Her versatility gives her the ability to play four different positions on the floor, but I think she does best at the 2, 3 or 4 position. She is a tough, hard-nose and driven athlete who loves to play the game. Howard has a great outside shot and a polished, high release point. Her greatest strength might be her ability to slash. She is quick and aggressive, and possesses a dynamic first step to finish strong at the glass. She is very adept on the boards and her extreme vertical makes her a tough matchup and shot blocker. Her 2.1 steals per game are also indicative of a good defensive player. She is a strong on-the-ball defender, allowing her to utilize her quick hands. I would classify her as a cornerstone player, with her broad range of advanced skills.
Howard is playing select ball this year for Coach John Hampton’s Texas Elite adidas team. Though it is still early in the season, she is averaging 14.5 points, 8.5 rebounds, 1.0 assist, 2.0 steals and 2.0 blocks per game. She is a must-see player for colleges building their recruiting schedule for the spring and summer. Colleges can watch her during the early viewing period at the PBR Heart of Texas Showcase April 24-26 at Fieldhouse USA in Frisco, Texas.
