The Gary Blevins Memorial Weekend Classic honors Gary Blevins because of his strong influence on both boys and girls basketball in the Dallas / Fort Worth area. Gary was instrumental in the organization and growth of the Texas Shooting Stars Basketball Club. Texas Shooting Stars was the first organized boys and girls basketball club in the state of Texas. The club had over 400 teams, which were all sanctioned AAU teams. Some well known select teams that originated from the Texas Shooting Stars include Texas Express, Team Ichiban, Team Texas, Mansfield Golden Eagles, Fort Worth Frogs, Texas Thunder, Texas Freedom, Lady Panthers Elite, Lady Lakers, Lady Dynamites, Texas Ballers, Lady Tar Heels, Mansfield Magic, Texas Xena Warriors, Triple Threat, Texas Twisters, Texas Cyclones, Waco Stars, Big Red, Hot Shots, Killer Bees, Texas Tornadoes, Texas Airborne and Texas Liberty. The teams mentioned previously won a total of twelve AAU National Championships and seven AAU National Runner-Up Championships. Until 2004 when the Texas Shooting Stars was dissolved, this club was the largest and most successful club in the country. If not for Gary Blevins, boys and girls basketball in Texas would not be as prevalent as it is today. We host this tournament in honor of Gary Blevins as a means of appreciation for his hard work and love for the game of basketball.
