First things first: the
Premier Basketball staff would like to thank the players, parents, families, coaches, team managers, the team moms in charge of laundry – ANY and ALL participants who made the
SUPER 64 an absolute success once again this year.
We had 270+ schools that included 500+ coaches come to watch these teams and players compete over the 4-day event. This cannot happen without quality organizations, and most importantly, quality people.
THANK YOU.
During the duration of this 4-day event, the Frisco Fieldhouse had an unrivaled environment. In the top Texas Division from the round of 16 on, there were hotly contested games on every single court at all times. Coaches, fans, and national evaluators were hustling from court to court in an attempt to see the closing minutes of several clutch endings.
The ultimate credit has to go to the players who truly came to perform in big moments. They competed with emotion and class. With eyes watching from every level and plenty of notes being taken, these ladies locked into the space in between the lines and went at it.
With teams representing every region of the country and even three teams representing Australia (one making the Final 4 in
AUSA Hoops Emerald, and another making the round of 16 in
Aussie Elite) in an international twist, this epic tournament had every style of play imaginable.
“ALL EYEZ ON WE” CHAMPIONSHIP GAME
In the most anticipated championship game in Super 64 history, SA Finest Cee Lou and Texas Elite adidas Gauntlet Prime went at it in a game that lived up to the hype. With two teams full of high major college players, college level coaching adjustments made on both sidelines by each staff, and a gym full of spectators to watch the game of the year, the environment could not have been any more intense.
“I bet you got it twisted, you don’t know who to trust” – I caught a lot of flack from all directions for predicting the championship game of
SA Finest - Texas Elite Prime on Twitter before the tourney started, including picking SA Finest to win it all. Just for the record, I got it RIGHT… This is what I do!
“Depend on me like the 1st and 15th” – The two giants of the tournament fought their way through multiple “land mines” to find each other.
SA Finest fought through a very tough bracket including nail biters against
Texas Elite Phenoms and
Lady Jets Platinum.
Texas Elite Prime coasted until having to overcome a 13-point deficit against
AUSA Hoops Emerald (an Australian team) with 11 minutes to go in the semis after facing the west coast power
Northwest Blazers Orange the night before.
“Game sharper than a razor blade” –
Texas Elite Prime came out firing on all cylinders as 2018 Alabama commit
Megan Abrams got cooking with a bevy of 3-pointers. With 2018 Oklahoma commit
Tatum Veitenheimer running the show, 2018 Arizona commit
Catherine Reese playing the role of Tazmanian devil by running the floor, rebounding, and getting to the charity stripe, Texas Elite built a double-digit lead 5 minutes into the game. The lead continued to balloon throughout the first half and into the second half as 2018 Florida State commit and appointed defensive stopper
Amaya Brown and 2018’s uncommitted wings
Bryn Gerlich &
Quincy Noble made timely shots and plays on the defensive end in Texas Elite’s 2-3 zone. 2018 uncommitted post
Mia Heide’s rebounding and physical defensive presence complimented by her razor-sharp feeds from the high post were another key as Texas Elite went up by 18 points with 10 minutes to go in the second half. (2018 Rice commit
Jasmine Smith was forced to sit with a hip injury.) And then the game changed…
“I put the top down, now it’s time to floss” –
San Antonio Finest finally cracked the 2-3 zone led by the 3-point shooting of fire flamer 2019
McKinzie Green who made big shot after big shot. Timely decisions and shot-making by the guard/wing quartet of 2019 Louisville commit
Nyah Green, 2018
Desi Caldwell, 2018 San Diego State commit
Sophia Ramos, and 2019
Kyra White quickly wilted the once 18-point lead to single digits with 5 minutes to go. Down the stretch, the paint presence and timely shot-making of forwards 2018
Nalyssa Smith, 2019
Liz Scott and 2018
DaNasia Hood greatly impacted the game.
In the closing moments of this epic battle, there were an abundance of huge plays made by both teams. From
Veitenheimer and
Caldwell’s play-making decisions at the point guard position to shot making from
Green and
Abrams, to the paint battle between
Smith and
Reese inside, the game could not have been any closer. In the end, the ball found
Nalyssa Smith’s hands for a floater
at the buzzer to WIN this instant classic 58-56.
Shout out to both Ray Caldwell for getting the long awaited
Super 64 championship and to the 2-time defending champion coach Joey Simmons for the class and dignity both their teams showed in the moments after the game. These two legendary coaches and their organizations are the reason why this game was so anticipated and the reason we are all already counting down the days to next year’s classic!!
