Riverdale Baptist School hosted the MLK Hoop Classic on January 15-18, 2016 at Riverdale Baptist School and Wise High School in Upper Marlboro, Maryland. Premier Basketball Report got the opportunity to take in some of the top talent in Maryland and surrounding states. Below is some of the outstanding talent present at the tournament:
2016 Kaila Charles - Riverdale Baptist (MD):
In a game against St. Laurent from Canada, Charles continued to show why Coach Frese and the University of Maryland are excited to have her in their 2016 class. She is an athletic wing/foward who impacts the game on both ends of the floor. The McDonald’s All-American can knock down the three, take her defender off the dribble and can be a force on the boards. She showed growing leadership as Riverdale Baptist was able to hold off St. Laurent’s second half run.
2017 Madison Lowery - TPLS (VA):
Lowery is a long, lean wing or forward with a quality three point shot who helps on the defensive boards. As she continues to develop her ability to create off a shot fake, look for her stock to skyrocket this summer. She brings elite size and length, which will allow her to play multiple positions at the next level.
2017 Qadashah Hoppie - The Patrick School (NY):
In a tight matchup against Good Counsel (MD), Hoppie put her stamp on the game with her ability to knock down big shots down the stretch. She has elite ability to break down her defender off the bounce and create her own shot or set up her teammate. She will be able to play either guard position in college.
2017 Chantal Gross - Capitol Christian (DC):
Gross is a combo guard with good handles, who uses a hesitation well to setup her drives. She has a high release on her three point shot and can finish with a floater over shot blockers. Defensively, she jumps the passing lanes well but depends on the steal too much at times.
2019 Chloe Chapman - Good Counsel (MD):
The MLK Hoop Classic was the first time I was able to watch Chapman play live, and she lived up to the hype. She is an electric point guard with blazing speed who can stop on a dime for a floater or pull up. She is a very good passer in transition and half court. Chapman has a bright future ahead of her.
