On Saturday, November 29, 2014 in Cookeville, Tennessee, University of Georgia Women’s Basketball Coach Andy Landers entered a territory that few have. With a 74-51 win over Tennessee Tech, the 22
nd ranked Lady Bulldogs advanced to a 7-0 start and claimed the Landmark Victory for Coach Landers. He becomes only the seventh basketball coach ever—men’s or women’s—to record 850 wins at one Division I school. The list includes other coaching hall of famers like Pat Summitt (1098 wins at Tennessee), Jim Boeheim (953 wins at Syracuse), Mike Krzyzewski (916 wins at Duke), Geno Auriemma (882 wins at Connecticut), Dean Smith (879 wins at North Carolina), and Adolph Rupp (876 wins at Kentucky). Landers is in his 36
th season at UGA, and is the only women’s basketball head coach the school has ever had. The milestone win over Tennessee Tech came against his alma mater, where he earned his masters degree in 1974. Overall in his career, Andy Landers has 932 career wins, which include 82 at Roane State, a junior college program in Tennessee.
Immediately following the victory, Coach Landers wanted to make something clear…
“These aren’t my wins. They belong to a lot of people. I’ve been at Georgia for 36 years so, yeah, that piece is mine. But the wins, the first one in 1979 all the way through tonight, those belong to a lot of people other than me.”
…a typical response for one of the classiest coaches in the business.
Some of Coach Landers other career achievements include:
Championships
Seven Time SEC Champions (1983, 1984, 1986, 1991, 1996, 1997, 2000)
Four Time SEC Tournament Champions (1983, 1984, 1986, 2001)
