Not unlike the US, there was quite a bit of basketball going on overseas during the month of January. Here is a quick run-down of some #WorldWideHoops from a few different regions since the New Year:
Baltic Sea Basketball Cup - January 3-5
The annual Baltic Sea Basketball Cup brings together Estonia, Finland, Latvia and Sweden’s U18 and U16 National Teams to battle on the court as they start their preparations for FIBA competition. Latvia brought home gold in both divisions with double digit wins in every game. The highlight of the tournament was 2021 Awak Kuier of Finland throwing down two dunks.

In the Cadete Final, Catalunya faced off against Andalucia, which was a rematch of last year’s Infantile Final. In the Infantile Final, Communidad De Madrid used a big first and fourth quarter to run away with the 75-46 victory over Catalunya. Madrid was paced with 24 points from 2023 Adriana Arroyo Plaza.
Women’s National Cup Championship - January 19
In January of each year, Basketball England hosts their National Cup Championship with a Professional, U18 and U16 men and Women’s Championship Game. The U18 Women’s Championship Game saw the Reading Rockets race out to a significant lead throughout the first half before Charnwood College Riders (who have participated in PBR events in the states) mounted a second half comeback. The Rockets held on for the 65-60 victory behind MVP’s Anabelle Latore Cria’s 17 points and 12 rebounds.
The U16 Women’s Championship Game found itself knotted at 60-60 early in the fourth quarter, but down the stretch the Sevenoaks Suns group was able to get baskets and stops when they needed it. MVP Tamara Fournillier-Onadeko scored eight of her 18 points down the stretch plus finished with 14 rebounds, seven assists and seven steals. The Nottingham Wildcats played valiantly while being lead by 25 points from Masie Evison.
