Fun Fact: Tate’s father, Joe Lombard, is the longtime and very successful coach of the Canyon program.
Spoiler Alert: Canyon won yet another State Championship this season as well.
4A Waco La Vega
Abilene Wylie
*Argyle Liberty Hill
The much anticipated 4A semi-finals and finals were a must-see. Argyle, led by do-everything forward Vivian Gray, defeated Waco La Vega to seal the deal on back-to-back State Championships. Gabby Standifer was named MVP with a performance of 18 points and 9 rebounds.
5A *Canyon Crosby
Vista Ridge
Frisco Liberty
Canyon is nearly always in the discussion for State Champion, holding true this year as Canyon defeated Frisco Liberty 41-34. Coach Joe Lombard has legendary status among high school coaches. Canyon junior guard Angel Hayden was named MVP with 16 points and 6 rebounds in the final.
6A North Shore
Dekaney
*Duncanville Cibolo Steele
Powerhouse and #2 in the nation, Duncanville did not come to San Antonio to play games. They handled the 6A competition in dominant fashion, winning two games by an average of 37 points. The MVP was given to sophomore Zarielle Green with a performance of 25 points, 6 rebounds, and 5 assists in the final. Coach Cathy Self-Morgan wins yet another ring.
As expected in Texas, there were a number of talented players that deserve mention at the State Tournament. Among those highlighted is 2018
Sedona Prince. The 6’7” forward/post is an athletic and agile player with limitless potential. Before all is said and done, she is sure to leave her mark on Texas high school basketball.
Baylor signee
Calveion Landrum displayed her immense talent in leading her team to the 4A final. She showed her ability off the dribble as well as the deep three ball. The Big 12 is getting a tremendous athlete in Landrum.
Brittany Brewer of Abilene Wylie is a special player. At 6’4”, with the ability to sprint the floor and hit the midrange jumper, the Texas Tech signee made a huge difference for Abilene Wylie.
2017
Vivian Gray of Argyle was arguably the most complete player at the State Tournament. From posting up and hitting turn around jumper after turn around jumper, handling the ball in the press, playing out of the pick and roll, making plays, and getting on the glass, she did a little bit of everything for her Argyle squad. The highly sought after forward was dynamic all weekend.
The duo of TCU signees,
Mikayla Christian and
Danielle Rainey, led their team to back-to-back State Tournament appearances. Rainey is an ultra athletic guard who can knock down the three and finish at the rim. Christian is a poised leader for her team and is a knock down three-point shooter, who creates well for teammates and does a really good job of advancing the ball up the floor in transition.
It would not be surprising to see Frisco Liberty make another run at the State Tournament in the near future. They are led by 2017s
Jordan Hamilton and
Rebecca Lescay. 2019
Randi Thompson is also a solid contributing guard/forward for this team.
North Shore was led by dynamic 2017 guard
Chasity Patterson. Her handles and range are really impressive. North Carolina signee
Alyssa Okoene held it down inside for the Mustangs.
Dekaney’s leader was undeniably
Jaelyn Richard-Harris. The LSU signee really controlled the semi-final vs. North Shore and is the heart and soul of her team. 2017
Jasmine Smith showed some impressive play as well.
Cibolo Steele is anchored by lengthy forward/post
Alexes Bryant (Oklahoma State signee). 2017
Antonia Anderson is a forward to keep an eye on in the future.
Duncanville had a very impressive front line of forwards and posts.
Cierra Johnson (Louisville signee),
Madison Townley (North Texas signee), and
Zarielle Green (top 10 prospect in her 2018 class) were too much for teams to handle all year long as evident by their 39-0 record. Johnson dominated the paint.
Other notable players were: 2018
Gabby Standifer (Argyle), 2018
Kandyn Faurie (Liberty Hill), 2017
McKenzie Taylor (Canyon), 2017
Nikki Cardano-Hillary (Vista Ridge), 2018
Tatyana Hill (Dekaney), 2017
Aakilah Caldwell (Duncanville), and 2018
Anaya Thomas (Duncanville).
